You go back up the stairs and begin reading the rest of the notes left by the scientist. The notes indicate he traveled by helicopter into the city to get closer to a location that he believed held important clues about the origin of the plague. The rooftop of the cabin is a heliport. Dropping the notes you head up the stairs and find a ladder leading to a roof access panel. There sitting on the roof is a helicopter under camouflage netting. The only other being that can fly the helicopter is laying dead in the basement. You could probably stay at this cabin for a very long time, but eventually the supplies will run out. Without a pilot there's no chance of flying out of here. The only thing left to do is to try and reach the city.
