In order to save the dying scientist you need to distract Mardis Salem and the stone statues. You throw the oil lamp hitting her. Her ragged clothing bursts into flames. Spinning wildly, she drops the scientist and tries to extinguish the flames. The statues back away from the fire. The scientist is able to crawl to safety. He quickly opens The Book of Mardis and finds the incantations he needs to recite. Mardis is busy with her own spells and she casts one to put out the flames.
